2026 | Issue/Heft 6.2: Understanding – Interpreting – Translating. Translation Studies under the Sign of Umberto Eco
[Guest Editors: Marco Agnetta
Brian O'Keeffe, Larisa Cercel

The sixth issue of the Yearbook for Translational Hermeneutics (YTH) will be dedicated to Umberto Eco’s substantial contributions to our understanding of language, signs, texts, and the world—each deeply connected to a sustained reflection on the conditions of understanding, interpretation, and translation. In theoretical works such as Opera aperta (1962), Lector in fabula (1979), Semiotica e filosofia del linguaggio (1984), and Dire quasi la stessa cosa (2003), Eco developed a complex model of communicati-on and meaning that foregrounds the dynamic interplay between author, text, and reader. His con-cept of the “open work” proposes a text that resists singular interpretation, offering instead a plurality of readings—though always within certain boundaries. Within this framework, translation itself ac-quires a new status: no longer a merely technical operation, it becomes a hermeneutic act in which cultural, historical, and semantic differences are actively negotiated.

2026 | Issue/Heft 6.1: Hidden Theory. Translational Discourses in Paratexts and Correspondances
[Guest Editors: Larisa Cercel, Brian O'KeeffeMarco Agnetta

Paratexts and correspondence by translators are far more than mere by-products of the translation process: they often constitute a discursive side field in which implicit poetological positions and theoretical assumptions are articulated. These “hidden theoretical discourses” unfold in prefaces, footnotes, dedications, commentaries, or private letters—often subtly, at times deliberately coded—and offer insights into the translator’s self-conception and reflective practice. This thematic issue is dedicated to exploring how such paratextual and epistolary materials can be read as sites of theory production. Central questions include: Which theoretical concepts can be reconstructed from paratexts and letters, even when they are not explicitly formulated? How do these discursive traces relate to the translated works themselves? And to what extent do they allow us to draw conclusions about the historical development of translational theories and practices?

2025 | Issue/Heft 5.1: Translation as Re-Rhythmization. On the Role of Rhythmic Shifts in Communication Across Linguistic, Cultural and Media Boundaries
[Guest Editors: Marco Agnetta, Katharina Walter

Rhythm has been rediscovered in research across diverse areas of the humanities, particularly in the past two decades. As a ubiquitous concept which has often been dismissed as overly vague, rhythm is integral to quite a few communicative phenomena. As an organizational form of time and definitely also of space, rhythm is a basic element that cannot be neglected in practice or theory. This particularly applies to music and literature (most obviously to lyric poetry), but also, more generally, to the cultural and life sciences. This makes rhythm one of the few variables common to the most diverse forms of communication and expression. On this basis, rhythm seems predestined to function as a hinge element in communication which links several forms of expression. From this perspective, the creation of intermedial, multimodal or polysemiotic artifacts is a synchronizing achievement. As a phenomenon with transmedial relevance, rhythm also controls intercultural and intermedial transfer processes. In the spectrum between extensive preservation and complete transformation, interesting rhythmic shifts occur between pre-text and subsequent text, between source and target communication. Whether it is the change of verse meter in poetry translation, the adaptation of translated song texts, the supplementation, complete revision or adaptation of an original by means of other sign systems and media genres – phenomena of re-rhythmization are omnipresent in the reproduction and transmission of meaningful structures across linguistic, media and cultural boundaries.

2025 | Issue/Heft 5.1: Human-Centred AI in the Translation Industry. Questions on Ethics, Creativity and Sustainability
[Guest Editors: Katharina Walter, Marco Agnetta

Although the ongoing technologization and automation of translation have the potential to greatly enhance productivity, they also limit translatorial agency and may consequently reduce the quality and creativity of translations. By the same token, translation tools based on artificial intelligence (AI), such as DeepL and ChatGPT, may also devalue human labor. While these critical issues require rigorous examination, as the contributions to this special issue of the Yearbook of Translational Hermeneutics (YTH) highlight, the significant opportunities afforded by AI-based translation tools will also not be overlooked. Contributions gathered in this thematic YTH issue on ethics and translatorial creativity in the age of AI address some or all of the following questions: 1. Which ethical and legal challenges arise from the widespread use of AI in different language services? 2. How is sustainable, high-quality and creative translation possible in the age of AI? 3. How is the language industry changing due to new and ever-improving AI tools?

2024 | Issue/Heft 4: Hermeneutics, Specialized Communication, and Translation
[Guest Editors: Miriam P. Leibbrand, Tinka Reichmann, Ursula Wienen]

The convergence of translation studies and research oriented towards specialized communication on the one hand and, on the other, translation studies and hermeneutics more broadly has been observable for several years. This issue of the Yearbook of Translational Hermeneutics aims to bring together research and theory-building at these interfaces from an intercultural and transcultural perspective. The scholarly investigation of translation in the sense of transcultural specialized communication (i.e. specialized translation and interpreting) encompasses theoretical and empirical approaches drawn from such diverse disciplines as translation studies, linguistics (text linguistics, language for special purposes, legal linguistics, business linguistics, etc.), communication studies, cultural studies, and the respective areas of study they imply (law, economics, technology, medicine, etc.). Translational hermeneutics, in turn, is fed by a variety of approaches ranging from understanding in terms of the art and craft of interpretation which is performed by the translating individual, through to approaches to translation and translation research informed by literary studies, cognitive science, and sociology (including the sociology of understanding), and also philosophically oriented approaches, especially those framed by phenomenological and philosophical hermeneutics. It can therefore be assumed that a more in-depth study of hermeneutics, specialized communication, and translation, has the potential to embrace a variety of scholarly approaches and can moreover accommodate a wide range of topics and questions.

2023 | Issue/Heft 3: Translation as Event. Performing and Staging Translations
[Editors: Brian O'Keeffe
, Larisa Cercel, Marco Agnetta

The editors of the Yearbook of Translational Hermeneutics invite contributions broadly aimed at relating translation theory and performance studies together, focused specifically on the notion of translation as an event. At issue, in this edition of the Yearbook, is the extent to which the activities, processes and products of translation can be characterized as performance, and whether the profiling of translators as performers illuminates their embodied experience, cognitive operations, and material practice. At issue, moreover, is whether theories and philosophies of the event and eventfulness can assist in describing what happens to a source text when it is translated, performed and transformed into a new guise – or even into a new mode of being. This goes particularly for texts subject to inter-semiotic and inter-medial translation and which are accordingly performed thanks to other modalities of expression.

2022 | Issue/Heft 2: Cognition and Hermeneutics. Convergences in the Study of Translation
[Guest Editor: Douglas Robinson]

It has recently become more apparent that there are strong commonalities and convergences between the cognitive and the hermeneutic approach to translation studies, especially as the cognitive approach has turned more and more towards affect theory and the question of kinaesthetics, and as hermeneutic research has increasingly undertaken research into the actual processes of interpretation. The second issue of the Yearbook of Translational Hermeneutics is accordingly devoted to an enquiry into the relationships that can be established between these two research fields.

2021 | Issue/Heft 1: Engaging with Translation. New Readings of George Steiner's After Babel
[Editors: Marco Agnetta, Larisa Cercel, Brian O'Keeffe]

The first issue of this annual publication is dedicated to a ‘classic’ representative of the hermeneutic approach to translation studies, namely George Steiner, who passed away in February 2020. Published under the auspices of the Research Centre Hermeneutik und Kreativität, this issue is devoted to a celebration of Steiner’s 90th birthday (2019) and to the 45th anniversary of After Babel, which first appeared in 1975. After Babel has not lost its power to galvanise contemporary research in translation and interpretation studies even today. This installment of the Yearbook of Translational Hermeneutics hosts a dozen scholars’ engagements with Steiner’s work, as well as a supplement devoted to book reviews.
